Double burden of malnutrition, Global strategies, reviewAbstract
The double burden of malnutrition—defined by the simultaneous presence of undernutrition and overnutrition—poses a profound and growing threat to global health. This review critically evaluates current global strategies aimed at combating this complex challenge, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries where malnutrition is most pervasive. Drawing upon a synthesis of peer-reviewed articles, policy documents, and empirical data from 2000 to 2023, the paper identifies key trends, examines policy efficacy, and uncovers persistent gaps in implementation. Findings highlight the effectiveness of interventions such as food fortification, nutrition education, agricultural diversification, and breastfeeding promotion, while also revealing barriers including cultural resistance, socioeconomic disparities, and policy fragmentation. The review stresses the need for integrated, community-specific, and sustainable strategies that address both the immediate symptoms and root causes of malnutrition. Future directions call for policy innovation, inclusive multisectoral collaboration, and increased investment in research and education to promote balanced nutrition across life stages and geographies.
